Al-Fadley calls for Arab solidarity in facing environmental challenges and water scarcity in Arab world

RIYADH — The Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture Eng. Abdulrahman Bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadley, emphasized the significant environmental challenges facing the Arab world, with approximately 90% of its environment situated in semi-arid, dry sub-humid, and sub-humid regions.

He called for solidarity among nations to find sustainable solutions to address these challenges. These remarks were made during the 43rd session of the Executive Board of the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD), held in Riyadh. Several Arab countries participated in the session.

Eng. Al-Fadley highlighted that Saudi Arabia, as part of its Vision 2030, aims to strengthen regional and global efforts in the development and sustainability of arid areas.

The Kingdom has launched various environmental initiatives, such as the Saudi Green Initiative, the Middle East Green Initiative, and the Global Initiative on Reducing Land Degradation and Enhancing Conservation of Terrestrial Habitats.

Eng. Al-Fadley emphasized that the Kingdom is implementing numerous programs, initiatives, and projects aligned with sectoral strategies to achieve national goals and preserve ecosystems.

Moreover, the Kingdom is committed to international environmental agreements, sustainable development goals, and integrated water resource management.

Minister Al-Fadley expressed his wishes for the success of the meeting, enhanced cooperation, and meeting the aspirations of the Arab people.

The Director General of ACSADD, Nasr ElDin AlObeid, commended the Kingdom’s role in advancing cooperation and promoting joint Arab action.

He acknowledged the constructive role of the Secretariat General of the League of Arab States, specifically its economic sector, in achieving desired goals.

AlObeid explained that extreme weather conditions, climate change, water scarcity, and global crises have adversely impacted production and food sustainability in the Arab region, posing significant challenges to food and water security.

AlObeid stressed that ACSAD is actively working towards achieving the goals of global sustainable development initiatives.

Additionally, ACSAD is implementing the Green Middle East initiative, which was launched by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed Bin Salman. — SPA
